Coffee has been around since 800 AD

It is said that goat farmers in Ethiopia first discovered coffee. They would watch their goats nibble the coffee fruit and then jump around. One day, they decided to try it for themselves and enjoyed the effects.

Coffee “beans” are actually a fruit

Coffee beans have gotten their name as they resemble the look and shape of a bean once roasted. But coffee is actually a fruit grown on a tree. 

Espresso means “pressed out”

The word Espresso comes from an Italian word that means pressed out. This makes sense as espresso is made by forcing hot water under high pressure through pressed, compacted coffee grounds. 

Brazil grows the most coffee in the world

Today, Brazil is credited for producing about ⅓ of the world’s coffee. Vietnam is the second-top producer

Finland consumes the most coffee in the world 

It has been found that the average adult from Finland drinks 27.5 pounds of coffee a year. In comparison the average American drinks 11 pounds a year.

Many people have tried to ban coffee

Back in 1511, leaders in Mecca believed it stimulated radical thinking and outlawed the drink. Some 16th-century Italian clergymen also tried to ban coffee because they believed it to be “satanic.” However, Pope Clement VII loved coffee so much that he lifted the ban and had coffee baptized in 1600. Even as recently as the 18th century, the Swedish government made both coffee and coffee paraphernalia (including cups and dishes) illegal for its supposed ties to rebellious sentiment.

Coffee could extend your lifespan

According to Harvard Health Publishing, research has linked moderate intake (about 3–4 cups per day) to a longer life span and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease.

Coffee is the 2nd largest traded commodity in the world

It’s the world’s 2nd largest traded commodity.  Crude oil is first. Yes, it is not a typo. Coffee is consumed in great quantities, making it the most beloved beverage after water. Its worth is over $100 billion worldwide
