The Health Benefits of Drinking Coffee

If you didn’t already know this, let us be the first to tell you. That cup of coffee you enjoy every single day is actually good for you! In this day and age, it seems all our favorite indulgences aren’t great for our overall health, but coffee actually comes with quite a few health benefits.

Now we aren’t doctors and this is not medical advice but a number of studies have come to the same conclusions on the following health benefits of coffee.

Improved Cognitive Function

Many people drink coffee in order to get the wheels turning in their brains and body each morning. Coffee acts as their jump start to the day. The science behind this feeling of being activated each morning is actually very interesting.

Caffeine increases your brain activity by inhibiting the activity of adenosine, which is what makes you feel tired. It then triggers the release of stimulating neurotransmitters like noradrenaline and dopamine. This makes you feel more alert and less tired.

Better Performance

Caffeine can lead to a short-term boost in brain function, improving mood, reaction time, general cognitive function, and even improved sport performance. For this reason, many athletes consume coffee before a big event.

Caffeine has been shown to boost the metabolic rate and increase fat breakdown. This is likely due to its interactions with the sympathetic nervous system.

Lower risk of ailments

Drinking coffee has been linked to actually lower your risk for developing certain diseases. The risk of developing Dementia, strokes, and even type 2 diabetes may be reduced by drinking coffee according to recent studies. Of course, these are all observational studies that don’t show a direct causation. But hey, if there’s a chance drinking coffee could protect you from disease, all the more reason to enjoy your daily cup!

Introducing More Antioxidants

We know coffee beans are full of antioxidants. What do these do for your health?

Antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against free radicals, which are unstable molecules that are released in your body These free radicals can damage your cells and are linked to heart disease, cancer, and other ailments.

Moderation is Key

As the saying goes, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. This rings true for your coffee consumption. Drinking coffee in moderation can be good for your health, however, it has been found that too much coffee can have negative effects on your health.

Anywhere from 1-4 cups of coffee a day is within the healthy range. When you start to consume more than that, the risk starts to outweigh the benefits. The risks of drinking too much coffee include disruption to your sleep cycle and an increase in anxiety, or even depression. Sensitivity to the caffeine in coffee varies from person to person, so you are the best judge of what is the right amount of coffee for you.

It should also be noted that while coffee is beneficial to your health, the additives in your favorite coffee drink may not be. Be aware that the cream, sugar, and flavor shots in all your favorite coffee creations should also be consumed in moderation each day.
